Risk Management Knowledge

Description:

This two day course is accredited by the Association for Project Management (APM).

The Association for Project Management has introduced risk management as a skill course and has provided a Knowledge and a Practitioner skill course in Risk Management. Both these risk management courses are designed to build on the knowledge gained in the Association for Project Management foundation qualification, the APMP, but it will not be essential to have completed the APMP prior to completing these risk management courses. These course are based upon the PRAM Guide – 2nd edition and lead to what are known as specific qualifications (SQ) which comprise two parts – knowledge and practice. We offer here the first of these courses – Risk Management Knowledge.

This two day course is intended to provide all the basic knowledge required for the application of risk. This Risk Management training course is based on a Syllabus produced by the APM Specific Interest Group (SIG) based upon the APM’s PRAM Guide (Project Risk Analysis and Management), although reference to other best practice publications are also covered.

PRAM is a five point process:

  • Define and Focus
  • Identification of Risk
  • Risk Analysis
  • Risk Planning
  • Risk Management

The course is built around a real case study and provides ample opportunity to understand the concepts of risk in the management of successful projects. There will be group and individual exercises aimed at anchoring the learning.

A one hour multiple choice exam is made available by the APM which leads to the first of two qualifications – the Knowledge (RMSQ).

This is an excellent course and is focused on achieving comprehensive knowledge.

Vital Benefits:

Risk management is fundamental to project management but also to anything which exists in the future. Project management is often defined as a “process designed to minimise the risk of project failure” and is therefore intrinsically related to risk and uncertainty. This course provides the following vital benefits:

  • A complete understanding of the risk process as described in the PRAM Guide
  • A clear practical guide to producing your own risk plan
  • An understanding of the many ways risk can be identified
  • An understanding of risk assessment and planning
  • An introduction to the risk strategies for threats and opportunities
  • A complete guide to qualitative and quantitative analysis of risk
  • The impact of human culture and behaviour on risk identification and assessment

Objectives:

Risk management is important and there are very few downsides of implementing risk. There does not seem to be any good reasons for not using risk management. In this course, it is our objectives to:

  • Provide a sound understanding of the whole risk management process
  • Help you understand the tools and techniques used in effective risk management
  • Show how risk is managed in a typical project environment
  • Use practical and interesting case studies which everyone can understand
  • Discuss experiences and common obstacles to good risk management
  • Provide all the knowledge necessary to pass the APM RMSQ Knowledge examination
  • Provide the examination if required

Topics:

This APM Specific Qualification is based on the APM Risk management syllabus and the PRAM Guide. The topics of this course cover all aspects of the syllabus as follows:

  • The five step process of Define and Focus, Identification of Risk, Risk Analysis and Planning, and finally the Management of the process
  • The development of the risk plan
  • The identification methods, the assessment and the strategies for managing them
  • Modern tools and how they work
  • The human factor: people who culturally vary in risk aversion
  • Advanced issues

Who to Attend:

Anyone unwilling to manage uncertainty may not be suitable for project management. However, as risk affects projects and businesses alike, risk management does not seem to be an option. Therefore we believe this course would benefit all the following groups:

  • The client staff
  • The project managers
  • The project staff
  • Line managers
  • The professional services teams
  • The senior supply chain managers
  • Anyone who wants to know more about risk management
  • Anyone who sees project management as a career
