Description:
This one day course is an important project skill.
This course is focused on the very important role that conflict plays in both success
and failure of projects. There will be success where positive conflict is allowed
to dominate and negative conflict is eradicated. Everyone understands conflict and
how it can arise and thrive, and yet many of us are reluctant to “get involved”
and remove it. Very often the reason is that we feel it is not our business and
“they” should sort it out themselves.
The course will cover the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument which has stood
the test of time. It will look at the five modes of conflict resolution and their
use and practise the process of putting them into practice. It will also look at
many of the habits and behaviours which cause conflict and how they can be changed
to provide us with a more predictable working environment. It will look at culture
as a source of conflict and friction and what we need to do to peacefully coexist
in a multicultural environment.
The course will equally look at positive conflict and how we can create it. It will
look at collaboratively creating the willingness to help each other by active and
fresh discussions from many points of view. It will explore the tools which are
available to help us work around the problems and challenges we face on complex
projects where a single solution is rarely available.
Conflict is part of the human condition and to fully understand it we need to look
deeply into ourselves and understand the reasons why we are prepared to risk good
relationships for the purpose of making a comment which might not in the end have
any benefit to us. The course will look at ways of creating an environment of cooperation
and well-being where all opinions can be tolerated and will serve to determine the
best positive way forward.
Conflict management is a crucial project skill for all the project team and the
success of a project will often depend on the collaboration of the parties involved.
An Attendance Certificate will be provided at the end of this course.
Vital Benefits:
Conflict can harm relationships and is the cause of many project failures. It is
critical that in order to be successful we are able to understand, monitor and resolve
negative conflict issues. Equally, positive conflict is essential for the determination
of the right solutions to complex problems so we also need to develop an environment
where positive conflict can prosper. The course provides the following vital benefits:
- A full understanding of conflict in its various forms
- A working knowledge of the five conflict resolution modes
- A working understanding of habits, behaviour and their influence on conflict
- A working understanding of the nature of culture and how it can lead to conflict
- How best to create positive conflict environments
Objectives:
Conflict management is a crucial project skill which can determine the success of
a project. There are many reasons why conflict occurs and many ways in which it
can affect the project and the people who work in the project environment. In this
course, it is our objectives to:

can impact on productivity
- Provide the tools and understanding to manage conflict in a positive way whilst
retaining individuals’ willingness to work effectively
- Introduce an understanding of the human condition where it relates to conflict

whilst eliminating negative conflict

Conflict management is vital to the success of the project and consequently is a
skill required by all the project staff. There are two issues here. The first is
how to deal with conflict once it has been created and the second is how to avoid
ourselves becoming the source of conflict by understanding how we interact with
others. We recommend this course to:
